Sigfox 에코시스템을 통해 개발된 새로운 Sigfox 모듈은 Sigfox 인증을 획득했을 뿐만 아니라 바로 사용이 가능하다. 이 모듈은 유럽, 중동 및 아프리카 시장에서 겨우 US $2.00에, 그리고 아메리카와 아시아 시장에서 $3.00 미만의 가격에 판매된다.

클라우드로 연결되는 장치가 발전하고 있는 가운데, 고비용 및 짧은 배터리 수명 문제는 이제 과거의 이야기가 됐다. 이 두 가지 문제는 클라우드와 통신하는 장치에 복잡한 실리콘 칩을 장착해야 했기 때문에 발생했던 사항이다.

새로운 초저비용 IoT 모듈은 비용 장벽을 크게 낮췄다. Sigfox는 이처럼 유례없는 저비용을 달성하고자 파트너들과 협력해 실리콘 차원까지 모든 설계 및 사양 측면을 최적화했다. 모듈 사양 역시 로열티로부터 자유로워, 훨씬 높은 수준의 혁신을 도모하는 동시에 최저비용을 달성할 수 있다.

Beecham Research 선임 연구분석가 David Parker는 “IoT에 장치를 연결하는 총비용이 감소함에 따라, 모듈 비용이 방정식에서 핵심 요소가 됐다”며 “오늘 발표한 모듈은 Sigfox가 시장에 선보이는 IoT 서비스 공급자 접근법을 강화시키고, 연결 비용을 낮추며, 더 많은 애플리케이션의 경제적 연결을 지원하고, 시장을 더욱 확장한다”고 말했다.

초저비용 모듈을 공급하는 첫 번째 파트너는 모듈 제조업체인 Wisol[http://www.wisol.co.kr/2015_wisol_home_eng/?ckattempt=1 ]이다. Wisol은 ON Semiconductor 단일칩 SoC[http://www.onsemi.com/ ]를 바탕으로 이미 샘플을 공급하고 있으며, 2016년 12월부터 대량 생산에 들어갈 예정이다. 그 외 InnoComm[http://www.innocomm.com/en/index.aspx ]도 트랜스시버를 바탕으로 모듈을 제작해, 2017년 1월부터 샘플을 공급하고, 2017년 3월부터 대량 생산을 시작할 예정이다.

Sigfox 네트워크는 24개국에 걸쳐 형성돼 있으며, 2018년까지 60개국 이상으로 확대될 예정이다. Sigfox는 연결 장치를 개발, 판매 및 지원하는 에코시스템 파트너들로 구성된 포괄적인 공급망을 구축했다. 이들 파트너는 반도체 업체, 모듈 제조업체, 개발업체, 디자인 회사, 전자 제조 전문 서비스/제조자 설계 생산업체, 장치 제조업체 및 유통업체 등으로 구성된다.

또한, Sigfox의 에코시스템 파트너는 Sigfox 프로토콜에 와이파이와 저전력 블루투스(Bluetooth Low Energy, BLE) 같은 보완적인 연결 프로토콜을 결합한 새로운 모듈도 출시할 예정이다. 이들 프로토콜을 Sigfox에 결합하면 여러 IoT 용도에서 필요로 하는 추가 혜택과 기능을 제공할 수 있다. 이와 같은 추가 저비용 모듈은 2017년 초에 출시될 예정이다.

Sigfox 국제 판매&파트너 부사장 Stuart Lodge는 “오늘 발표한 모듈은 자사의 파트너 에코시스템이 얼마나 견고한지를 반영한 것”이라며 “자사의 파트너 에코시스템은 저비용 장치를 지원하고, 자사의 호환 모듈과 장치의 대량 생산을 가속한다”고 말했다.

이어 그는 “수십억 개의 연결된 장치가 사회 및 경제 발전에 이바지하는 미래가 오리라 확신한다”면서 “저전력 장치의 비용을 크게 낮춤으로써 이 확신을 더욱 빨리 현실로 만들 수 있을 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

또한, 그는 “자사는 모든 실리콘 및 장치 파트너를 포함한 전체 에코시스템과 협력함으로써, IoT 대량 채택을 방해하는 장벽을 낮추는 데 계속 집중할 계획”이라며 “비용 문제를 극복하고, 시장이 요구하는 새로운 솔루션을 출시하기 위해, 앞으로도 자사의 에코시스템 파트너들을 꾸준히 확대하고 지원할 예정”이라고 설명했다.

이것이 바로 Sigfox가 파트너 네트워크와 함께 사물에 생명을 불어넣는 방식이다.

NXP 보안 차량 접근성 부사장 Volker Graeger는 “Sigfox의 에코시스템은 물론 장치 연결성 부문에서 판도를 바꿔놓을 접근법에 합류하게 돼 기쁘게 생각한다”며 “이 IoT 모듈은 현재는 상상도 불가능한 새로운 사업 모델과 이용 사례를 위한 촉매가 될 것”이라고 말했다.

Enabled through the Sigfox ecosystem, the new Sigfox certified and ready to use modules cost as little as US $2.00 for European, Middle East and African markets, and less than $3.00 for American and Asian markets.

In a developing world of cloud connected devices, high costs and short battery life are now a thing of the past. These barriers were once due to the complex silicon chips required for the devices to communicate with the cloud.

Sigfox is different. Device-to-cloud communication is now possible without connections, as the Sigfox network and devices simply listen in and capture specifically formatted messages from around the world, needing something as simple as a silicon chip that you find in a remote control. With its unique approach, Sigfox is well positioned as the only IoT communications provider to enable a future where devices no longer need to rely on batteries to communicate with the cloud.

To achieve this unprecedented low cost, Sigfox worked with its partners to optimise every aspect of the design and specification down to the silicon level. The module specifications are also royalty free to ensure the lowest possible cost, whilst encouraging even greater levels of innovation.

The first partners delivering the ultra-low cost modules include module manufacturer, Wisol [http://www.wisol.co.kr/2015_wisol_home_eng/?ckattempt=1 ], who is already delivering samples based on ON Semiconductor single chip SoC [http://www.onsemi.com/ ] and who will be starting mass production in December 2016. Additionally, InnoComm [http://www.innocomm.com/en/index.aspx ] will be manufacturing modules based on NXP [http://www.nxp.com/ ] transceivers. Its samples will be available from January 2017, with mass production starting in March 2017.

The Sigfox network spans 24 countries and is on track to reach over 60 by 2018. Sigfox has built a comprehensive supply chain of ecosystem partners that are developing, selling and supporting the connected devices. These partners consist of semiconductors, module makers, developers, design houses, Electronics Manufacturing Services/Original Design Manufacturers, device makers, and distributors.

Sigfox ecosystem partners will also be launching new modules to combine the Sigfox protocol with other complimentary connectivity protocols, such as Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Combining these protocols with Sigfox will deliver additional benefits and features that are required by many IoT applications. These additional low cost modules will be available in early 2017
